On Tuesday September 27th 215 students from Athens Elementary, Immanuel Lutheran of Wisconsin Rapids, Neillsville Middle School, and Pittsville Elementary enjoyed Diversity Day at The Highground, a unique education-filled day.   The students became a part of The Highground’s mission of healing and education.

Considering the wealth of cultural resources in north central Wisconsin, Diversity Day includes presentations given by:

Bill Snedic – Slovenian Culture

David Koch – Center for Independent Living

Joan Johannes – Native American

Carol Bender – Swedish Folkart

Don Streiff – Forestry Guide

Marieke Penterman – Holland’s Cheese

Debbie Crow – O’Neida Native American

Kunu Buffalo Helgesen – Native American Hide Tanning

Lillie Paustian – Mississippi Chactaw Native American

During a brief tour of The Highground, the students learned about respect, duty, honor and country.   Our mission and objectives are to celebrate our similarities and differences, to recognize misinformation, to claim pride in group identity, to understand the personal impact of discrimination through the telling of stories and to learn hands-on tools for dealing effectively with discriminating comments and behavior.
