On Independence Day folks gathered at the Learning Center as the Liberty Bell tolled, signaling the start of the ceremony to celebrate our nation’s birthday. Colors were presented by the Neillsville American Legion Post 73 and Loyal American Legion Post 175. The invocation was given by Jerry Smith and The Star-Spangled Banner was led by Miles Voss. Veteran Brian Barth spoke about celebrating our nation’s freedom and honoring those servicemen who keep our country free. Herb Samme told of his journey to Iraq in memory of his son, Fallen Hero LCpl Eric A. Palmisano, USMC. As is tradition on The Highground, the names of WI soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan were read. Tim Rueth played Taps. It was a beautiful day on The Highground.
Four Gold Star families joined The Highground’s July 4th Celebration. Pictured from left to right are Bobbie & Herb Samme, parents of Eric Palisano; Jaena & Gwyn Howells, parents of Alun Howells; Sandy & Scott Hautamaki, parents of Ryan Cantafio; and Sue & Bruce Brooman, parents of Jeremy Vrooman. What an honor to have the parents of some of our fallen heroes present at the celebration.
